COSTUME LISTS

Our costume guidelines are merely suggestions. They are to aid your imagination. Please do not feel obligated to buy or rent costumes. We hope that you can design something from what is already in your home. It is the process that the children undergo that is most important to us, not the costumes. Please also know that if your child is playing more than one character, they only need one costume. Costume changes are unnecessary.

CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

AUGUSTUS GLOOP – “A greedy boy” - Usually considered to be from Germany. Lederhosen, tall long socks, short shorts, and or jacket. (Grey, Black, White and Green are good colors for him) It would be nice to have his costume stuffed with something to make him look even more “Greedy”.

GRANDPA JOE – Usually seen in an old looking casual suit with a tie. He is in no way rich, and this should be reflected in his clothing.

MIKE TEAVEE – “A boy who does nothing but watch television. He had no less than eighteen toy pistols of various sizes hanging from belts around his body.” He is seen as a child who loves westerns or gangster movies. His dress should reflect that. There are so many ways to go with this! Whatever is chosen should be very fun!

THE LION KING

As I am sure most of you know, the Tony award winning costumes created for the Broadway version of The Lion King, by Julie Taymor and Michael Curry are amazing. They mixed African-Style costumes with Masks and Puppets to make the world of the African Pride Lands come to life. (The Broadway version is available to watch on You Tube if you are interested) For our production, although it is unnecessary and impossible to recreate their designs, I think we should think in this vein.

When creating costumes, it is more important to create an IDEA the character. A color scheme and a simple tail, headband with ears attached, hat, etc. can go a long way. I would encourage you and your child to look at pictures of the animal being portrayed for ideas. If you decide to create a mask, please know that the original design of having the masks rest over, or on top of, the heads of the actors is for good reason. Please make sure that above all else, we can see the actor’s face and mouth, otherwise we will lose their words and the story.

Makeup for the show is optional and must be done by the parents before the performance. Any make-up should resemble the animal your child is portraying or have an African “tribal-look” to it.

Simba is the protagonist and the son of King Mufasa. Lion. Colors are browns, golds, black and white.

Scar the antagonist, is Mufasa's jealous and scheming brother who desires the throne. Lion. Colors are browns, golds, black and white. Has a scar over his left eye.

Mufasa is the King of the Pride Lands and Simba's father. Lion. Colors are browns, golds, black and white.

Sarabi is Simba's mother and the leader of the lionesses. Lion. Colors are light browns, light golds, and white.

Timon and Pumbaa are the comical meerkat and warthog duo who live under the philosophy of "Hakuna Matata" (no worries). They become Simba's guardians during his exile. Pumbaa’s colors are ruddy brown, brown, pink, white, and black. Timon’s colors are mustard brown, yellow, white and orange.

Nala is Simba's childhood friend and intended mate. Lion. Colors are light browns, light golds, and white.

Rafiki is a wise mandrill who is responsible for presenting the newborn prince of the lions at Pride Rock for all to see. Colors are dark grey, white and black. Face and bottom are usually bright blue and red or pink.

Zazu is a loyal hornbill who serves as Mufasa's majordomo. Colors are royal blue, light blue, orange and yellow.

Shenzi, Banzai and Ed are a trio of hyenas who assist Scar in his evil doings. Colors are grey and black.

Sarafina is Nala's mother. Lion. Colors are light browns, light golds, and white.
